Chapter 14 - Fire And Water
When the dwarves were in the hall looking at the mountain of treasures, Smaug was heading to Lake Town to take revenge on the people. The people of Lake Town first thought that flaming Smaug was gold flowing the river, but Bard, a grim-voiced, grim-faced but courageous man soon realize that it was Smaug, and prepared for an attack. Smaug destroyed the only bridge that connected land and Lake Town and breathed fire on all the houses. He enjoyed the destruction. The men's arrows had no effect on Smaug's hard scales. The people in Lake Town was overpowered. Many people fled to the shore to save their lives. The master of Lake-Town was very selfish since he abandoned the town earlier than most of the citizens.
Bard stayed at Lake Town to fight against the dragon until the last moment. Then suddenly, a thrush landed on his shoulders and tells him Smaug's weakness. The thrush was listening to Bilbo on the mountain and came to Bard to tell him the information. The thrush was talked in the language of the thrushes but Bard was able to understand it because Bard was the descendant of Girion, Lord of Dale who once communicated with thrushes. Bard shot a black arrow targeting Smaug's weak point which was a small space on his left breast where he didn't have any scales. The arrow successfully struck the weak spot, and Smaug fell dead on Lake Town, destroying more of it. The people that survived grieved that Bard had died, but Bard swam to the shore and declared that he was alive. The people praised Bard for killing Smaug and treated him as a king. Only the master of the Lake Town was reluctant about this.
Soon many people cursed the dwarves (and Bilbo) for waking up Smaug but assumed that they were already killed by him. The people were planning to move to the North, towards the Lonely Mountain to rebuild their homes and to demand some of the dwarves' wealth. The news that Smaug was dead spread through Middle-Earth very quickly. It reached the wood elves, Beorn and the goblins. The wood elves sent armies to the people of Lake Town to help their town recover, but also to the Lonely Mountain to get some treasure from the dwarves whom they thought were already dead.
I felt sorrow for the people of Lake Town because their town was destroyed because the dwarves awakened Smaug. This made me a little angry towards the party because innocent people died. However, Bilbo found Smaug's weak point first so I think we can thank Bilbo for that. In this chapter, I was surprised that Smaug was killed by Bard and not the dwarves. I thought Smaug was the rival of Thorin and his company, so they ought to kill Smaug. Instead, Bard suddenly appeared in the story and killed Smaug. Smaug is also the rival of the people in Dale so I thought Bard killing Smaug was as if the king of Dale hunted down his enemy and returned to become a king again. If this was the climax of this story, I think it would be disappointing, so I think killing Smaug was a false climax and there is a more exciting story after this chapter.
