Chapter 18 - The Return Journey
When Bilbo became conscious again, he noticed that he was alone. He also noticed that his side has won the battle. A man came to the hill to find Bilbo, so Bilbo took off his ring and went to the camp where the people were waiting. Gandalf was happy to see Bilbo alive because Gandalf was worried that Bilbo was dead. However, there was bad news too; Thorin had a fatal injury and was dying. Thorin gave his last words to Bilbo. He said he will give some treasure to Bilbo and take back the words he had said to Bilbo. Of course, Bilbo told Thorin he wasn't angry at Thorin. Then Thorin said, "If more of us valued food and cheer and songs above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world" and passed away. Bilbo turned away and wept; he had a kind soul.
In Thorin's tomb, Bard laid the Arkenstone and the Elven-king laid Orcrist, the elvish sword. Other news were told to Bilbo too. When Bilbo was unconscious, the Eagles attacked the goblins, casting them off the mountains, but the army of great Eagles was still not enough. Then Beorn in the form of a giant bear joined the battle. He was so powerful that he killed Bolg and many goblins. This made the goblins retreat to many places. However, this victory cost many lives of dwarves, elves and men. Kili and Fili died defending Thorin. Dain became the new King Under The Mountain, and he offered a one-fourteenth share of the treasure to Bilbo, respecting Thorin's contract. Humble Bilbo only took two boxes of treasure, one filled with gold and another silver saying he would get murdered with too many treasures. Then he bid the dwarves farewell and departed with the elves, Gandalf and Beorn. At the border of Mirkwood Bilbo, Gandalf and Beorn bid farewell to the elves; Bilbo wanted to go around Mirkwood. Bilbo gave a necklace made out of jewels to the Elven-king as a gift. Then Bilbo was named elf-friend. The wild became less dangerous since the goblins and Wargs have almost perished. During the winter, Bilbo and Gandalf stayed at Beorn's house until spring and they merrily feasted there. Spring came and Bilbo and Gandalf left Beorn's house. They went through the Misty Mountains and passed where they were first captured by goblins. During the return journey, Bilbo's Tookish personality was getting weaker and the Baggins personality was getting stronger meaning that he was tired of adventures.
This chapter was the declining part after the climax. All was a happy ending except that Thorin, Kili and Fili died. It was good that in the end Thorin regretted his desire for treasure and became decent again. I think his last words were a big theme in this book; don't desire money too much but value peace. The scene where Bard and the Elven-king laid the Arkenstone and Orcrist represent the friendship between the different races so that is a good ending too.
I thought there was also another theme: A single hobbit that is such a small existence in the vast world can make a huge difference in the history of Middle Earth. Bilbo started his journey as an ordinary hobbit enjoying his uneventful life but by the end of the journey, he has shown that he is kind, brave, forgiving, rational and unselfish. However, throughout this adventure, he never changed his basic personality; his love of his peaceful hobbit-hole. This chapter tells the readers what happened to other characters after the battle. I thought this makes the readers feel relieved and answers any questions that the reader might have about the other characters. I was surprised that Azog didn't appear in the battle at all, because in the movie, Azog is the second antagonist of Thorin, and there is a big battle between them.
