4/27 the Hobbit chapter 4

Chapter 4 - Over Hill And Under Hill

Now the party was climbing the dangerous path of the Misty Mountains. They could see the lands they've passed and Bilbo knew he was so far away from his comfy hobbit-hole. Very unluckily a terrible thunderstorm had hit the Misty Mountains and the stone-giants were playing catch using rocks instead of a ball (which was really dangerous for the party). The rain was blown by the wind and hitting the party, so they evacuated to a small cave that Fili and Kili found. They were in a horrible state similar to chapter 2. The party was relieved and soon they were sleeping.

However, actually, the cave was the front porch of Goblin-Town. A crack had opened in the back of the cave, ugly goblins came out of the crack and carried the dwarves and Bilbo inside to the deep, dark mountain. Fortunately, Gandalf was woken up by Bilbo's screaming and was able to kill several goblins but he was separated from the rest of the party. The goblins were a savage creature, they took all the baggage from the dwarves (and Bilbo), whipped them cruelly and ate the ponies they were riding.

The dwarves and Bilbo were taken to meet the Great Goblin (the leader of the goblins). Thorin tried to explain to him that they were just resting. However, the sword Thorin took from the trolls, which was called Goblin-cleaver was infamous among goblins and had scared them which made them angry. The dwarves and Bilbo were nearly killed by the goblins. Suddenly a sword slashes the Great Goblin and kills him. It was Gandalf of course, and now they were all running away from the swarm of raging goblins. The dwarves carried Bilbo (because Bilbo was a slow runner) and ran as fast as they could, but the goblins knew this place better than the party. Dori, who was carrying Bilbo was grabbed by one of the goblins. Bilbo fell into the deep darkness, hit his head hard on a rock and became unconscious.

As I expected chapter 4 was more exciting. In this chapter, the goblins were introduced, which makes this novel sound more like a fantasy novel. I realized that each race in this book has its own type of characteristics. For example, hobbits are quiet and peaceful, dwarves are noisy (in a good way), elves are smart and goblins are cruel. I thought that these characteristics are the stereotypical characteristics that people have towards fantasy novels. Other than introducing goblins, this chapter also showed that Gandalf is powerful and agile during battle.

Chapter 14 - Fire And Water When the dwarves were in the hall looking at the mountain of treasures, Smaug was heading to Lake Town to take revenge on the people. The people of Lake Town first thought that flaming Smaug was gold flowing the river, but Bard, a grim-voiced, grim-faced but courageous man soon realize that it was Smaug, and prepared for an attack. Smaug destroyed the only bridge that connected land and Lake Town and breathed fire on all the houses. He enjoyed the destruction. The men's arrows had no effect on Smaug's hard scales. 5/6 The Hobbit chapter 19

Chapter 19 - The Last Stage Bilbo was now at Rivendell.  He had not been home for over a year.  At Riverdell, he and Gandalf rested and told their stories to Elrond. Then Gandalf confesses where he had been when he was not with the dwarves. He was at the great council of the white wizards who had driven the Necromancer from Mirkwood. The Necromancer was actually Sauron, the evil lord that appears in "the Lord of the Rings" as the main antagonist. Then they left Rivendell. They went past the river where they were captured by three trolls and dug up the box of treasure they took from the trolls. Bilbo was surprised when he got back to his hobbit-hole. Bilbo was presumed dead, and his belongings were being sold at an auction. He stops the auction and gets his things back from other people, but he lost his reputation as a good hobbit. 5/6 The Hobbit chapter 18

Chapter 18 - The Return Journey When Bilbo became conscious again, he noticed that he was alone. He also noticed that his side has won the battle. A man came to the hill to find Bilbo, so Bilbo took off his ring and went to the camp where the people were waiting. Gandalf was happy to see Bilbo alive because Gandalf was worried that Bilbo was dead. However, there was bad news too; Thorin had a fatal injury and was dying. Thorin gave his last words to Bilbo. He said he will give some treasure to Bilbo and take back the words he had said to Bilbo. Of course, Bilbo told Thorin he wasn't angry at Thorin. Then Thorin said, "If more of us valued food and cheer and songs above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world" and passed away. Bilbo turned away and wept; he had a kind soul.
