Chapter 8 - Flies and Spiders
Mirkwood was dark and gloomy, creepy eyes stared at the party from the darkness and queer noises came from the forest floor. The forest made the party tired, scared and anxious. They did not have much food and were hungry too. They came to the black stream. Beorn had told them to never touch the water. Unluckily Bombur falls in the stream and falls asleep, they rescued him and they all managed to cross the river using a boat which was already on the river. The party saw a flicker of lights in the forest and realized that the wood elves were having a feast. They were so hungry that they ignored Beorn and Gandalf's warning not to wander off the path. The party goes off the elven road and tried to go to the lights, but when they got closer to the light, the light suddenly disappeared and pure darkness fell upon the party. This happens 3 times, and they get separated from each other, completely losing the way back to the elven road. Bilbo was by himself. He falls asleep in the pure darkness. When he woke up, he was being attacked by a giant spider and he kills the spider using his blade. It was his first time ever to kill something without anybody else's help. He felt strong after killing the spider and names his sword "Sting".
The dwarves were in a worse situation: a colony of spiders had wrapped them up with spider's silk and hung them in the trees. Some dwarves were even poisoned. Bilbo puts on his ring for safety, then threw stones and sang songs to taunt the spiders. Bilbo draws the spiders far away from the dwarves, sneaked back to the dwarves and saves them. However, soon the raging spiders came back to attack Bilbo and the awaken dwarves. They were soon overpowered by the spiders and Bilbo uses the ring in front of the dwarves. As they fought, luckily, they went inside a clearing that the wood elves use. It was protected by magic so the spiders retreated. The dwarves were very surprised about Bilbo's ring and were interested in how he got that ring. Then they realized that Thorin was not with them. He was actually captured by the wood elves before the dwarves were captured by the spiders. Wood elves are one of the several races of elves. They were more cautious and less wise than the high elves in Rivendell, but still good people. When the king questions Thorin why he was in Mirkwood, Thorin didn't answer. Thorin was put in the dungeon but was still served food.
As I expected, it was an exciting chapter again. I think there is definitely a pattern to the writing. The most important thing in this chapter is Bilbo killing the spider alone without anybody's help. Naming his sword represents power and glory so this event made Bilbo stronger and courageous. Also in previous chapters, Bilbo was a burden to the dwarves but in this chapter he saves them. I think this is a big turning point in Bilbo's life. Something that surprised me in this chapter was Bilbo confessing about the ring. In the movie, he doesn't confess this and only Gandalf knows that Bilbo has the ring. Furthermore, the narrator is mentioning events that Bilbo doesn't know, so I'm sure that the point of view was actually third person omniscient, not limited.
