Chapter 9 - Barrels out of bond

When the dwarves and Bilbo were wandering in the forest to find the elven path again, they were abruptly surrounded by many wood elves armed with bows. The dwarves were too hungry and tired to resist being caught, but Bilbo slipped on his ring and quietly crept out from the place. The elves took the dwarves to their king and the king asked the same questions that he asked Thorin. Same as Thorin, the dwarves refuse to tell the purpose of their journey so they all get locked up in the dungeons (they were served food and drink too). Meanwhile, invisible Bilbo who slipped inside the elves' cave was devising a plan to escape the elves' cave but there was one problem; doors were locked by magic. The wood elves were trading goods using barrels with Men in Lake-Town down the river. The barrels from Lake-Town were carried upstream to the elves and the empty barrels were floated down the river. Bilbo steals the dungeon keys from a drunken elf, frees the dwarves from the dungeon and puts them and himself in the empty barrels. The barrels roll thorough the trapdoor and floats down the river straight to Lake-Town.

Rather than an action event, this chapter was an escape event. However, the party was able to eat food and drink, rest for a while. Therefore this chapter was in the middle of an exciting chapter and the resting chapters. The most surprising thing in this chapter was that the dwarves were able to escape the wood elves' land quietly and unnoticed. In the movie, there is a dynamic fight between the dwarves, elves and orcs. I didn't know the movies changed a lot of things in the book, but it doesn't mean that the movies are bad. In this chapter, again Bilbo alone (or with the help of the ring) saves the dwarves from a bad situation. Bilbo is beginning to change from being a quiet hobbit to a brave hero. In the novel, it is mentioned that the wood elves' favourite tree was Beeches. Beech trees can grow huge and live for 300 years so I think that represents elves' dignity and immortality. Beech trees also represent studies and knowledge, so that correlates with the elves too.

Chapter 14 - Fire And Water When the dwarves were in the hall looking at the mountain of treasures, Smaug was heading to Lake Town to take revenge on the people. The people of Lake Town first thought that flaming Smaug was gold flowing the river, but Bard, a grim-voiced, grim-faced but courageous man soon realize that it was Smaug, and prepared for an attack. Smaug destroyed the only bridge that connected land and Lake Town and breathed fire on all the houses. He enjoyed the destruction. The men's arrows had no effect on Smaug's hard scales. The people in Lake Town was overpowered.  Many people fled to the shore to save their lives. The master of Lake-Town was very selfish since he abandoned the town earlier than most of the citizens. 5/6 The Hobbit chapter 19

Chapter 19 - The Last Stage Bilbo was now at Rivendell.  He had not been home for over a year.  At Riverdell, he and Gandalf rested and told their stories to Elrond. Then Gandalf confesses where he had been when he was not with the dwarves. He was at the great council of the white wizards who had driven the Necromancer from Mirkwood. The Necromancer was actually Sauron, the evil lord that appears in "the Lord of the Rings" as the main antagonist. Then they left Rivendell. They went past the river where they were captured by three trolls and dug up the box of treasure they took from the trolls. Bilbo was surprised when he got back to his hobbit-hole. Bilbo was presumed dead, and his belongings were being sold at an auction. He stops the auction and gets his things back from other people, but he lost his reputation as a good hobbit. 5/6 The Hobbit chapter 18

Chapter 18 - The Return Journey When Bilbo became conscious again, he noticed that he was alone. He also noticed that his side has won the battle. A man came to the hill to find Bilbo, so Bilbo took off his ring and went to the camp where the people were waiting. Gandalf was happy to see Bilbo alive because Gandalf was worried that Bilbo was dead. However, there was bad news too; Thorin had a fatal injury and was dying. Thorin gave his last words to Bilbo. He said he will give some treasure to Bilbo and take back the words he had said to Bilbo. Of course, Bilbo told Thorin he wasn't angry at Thorin. Then Thorin said, "If more of us valued food and cheer and songs above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world" and passed away. Bilbo turned away and wept; he had a kind soul.
