Chapter 12 - Inside Information
The dwarves sent Bilbo into the mountain to investigate since he is a burglar, and was originally hired to steal the treasure. No-one volunteered to come with poor Bilbo, except Balin, who was a little fond of Bilbo, but he only went inside the passage for a little. Bilbo slipped on the ring and went down the dark passage to the hall where Smaug sleeps. However, Bilbo wasn't aware that Smaug could smell Bilbo's scent. Bilbo saw the enormous, terrible dragon lying asleep on a mountain of gold, gems and other treasure.
He was glowing red, smoke was coming out of his nostrils. He had claws like swords, scales like armour and a tail like a whip. Bilbo was terrified but as a burglar, he stole a golden cup from the mountain of treasure and brought it back to the dwarves. The dwarves were astonished and were overjoyed at the sight of the treasure, but unfortunately, Smaug woke up, notices a single cup was stolen and was outraged. He flew out of the mountain, scorched the mountain with his flames and ate the ponies which the party was riding. The party hid in the passage to avoid been killed by Smaug. He eventually went back inside the mountain to continue sleeping.
Now, the party realized the inadequacy of their plan. They weren't sure how to steal all the treasure from the mountain or kill Smaug. Bilbo thought of ideas and making plans of what to do from now on. His conclusion was to check to see if Smaug was sleeping and try to find his weak spot. The dwarves accepted Bilbo's plan because they were starting to respect him. When Bilbo went down the passage, Smaug was waiting for the thief. Luckily Bilbo was wearing his ring but still, Smaug smelt his scent. He didn't recognize a hobbit's smell. Bilbo tried to calm Smaug's temper by flattering and talking in riddles. It was working, but the dragon was eloquent too. He tried to make Bilbo tell the truth but Bilbo resisted this, and soon he ended the chatting to escape. Smaug breathed flames at Bilbo, fortunately, he fended this. At the open area around the secret door, Bilbo told the dwarves about his conversation with Smaug and more importantly that he found a weak spot in his scales. When the dwarves were discussing how they are going to kill the dragon, Bilbo sensed the dragon lurking outside near the open area. They shut the door, not so soon Smaug scorched the walls of the mountain. Then Smaug headed to Lake Town, thinking they had helped the thief and seeking revenge. Meanwhile, the passage was blocked by broken rocks that collapsed, and the party was trapped inside the dragon's den.
This thrilling chapter has explicitly showed Smaug's power, intensity and slyness. He was outraged that someone had stolen a single cup from one of his mountain of treasures, which shows how greedy Smaug is. I cannot understand why Smaug wants treasures so much because he can't use those treasures, so there is not much value to it to him. To me, it doesn't make sense to have a dragon hoard the treasure when he has no use for it. There is no reason why a dragon would desire treasure. On the Internet, it said that Smaug is a symbol of unlimited and useless greed but that does not come across in the book.
Bilbo is becoming more and more courageous and also the party is relying on him now. It might be the fact that Bilbo has the advantage of having the ring which gives him more confidence and changed Bilbo's personality in a good way.
