9/16 creating a country

     We continued creating policies of our countries in today's lesson too. First, we decided on the tax rates. We are a socialist country, so our tax rates must be high in order to provide citizens with good and free welfare services. We also introduced progressive taxation system which imposes higher tax rates to people with higher income. 

    Then we decided on the punishments. There are two types of crimes, white collar crimes (financial crimes) and blue collar crimes (crimes that cause direct physical damage). White collar crimes are crimes of people stealing money illegally such as fraud or falsification of accounts. Blue collar crimes are what we usually think of crimes such as murder and robbery. In most countries, criminals of white collar crimes are punished less than blue collar crimes. However, white collar crimes can also cause a massive damage to one's careers or reputations. Therefore, for the punishments we decided that we would calculate how much damage was afflicted by the crime and make the criminal compensate that money.  

    Lastly, we decided on what political view we were going to adopt. Conservatives think the best society exists in the past, and desires to not change the society. Therefore many religious people are conservative too (but not all of them). Progressives think the best society exists in the future, and desires to change the society. Since these two ideologies are view the world completely in the opposite, so it cannot coexist. One of my teammates said that we shouldn't use the term "conservative" or "progressive" because some people are conservative in an issue and progressive in another issue, therefore we cannot assume someone (or a country) as a completely conservative/progressive person. We couldn't get to a conclusion on this topic.

5/6 The Hobbit chapter 19

Chapter 19 - The Last Stage Bilbo was now at Rivendell.  He had not been home for over a year.  At Riverdell, he and Gandalf rested and told their stories to Elrond. Then Gandalf confesses where he had been when he was not with the dwarves. He was at the great council of the white wizards who had driven the Necromancer from Mirkwood. The Necromancer was actually Sauron, the evil lord that appears in "the Lord of the Rings" as the main antagonist. Then they left Rivendell. They went past the river where they were captured by three trolls and dug up the box of treasure they took from the trolls. Bilbo was surprised when he got back to his hobbit-hole. Bilbo was presumed dead, and his belongings were being sold at an auction. He stops the auction and gets his things back from other people, but he lost his reputation as a good hobbit. 5/6 The Hobbit chapter 18

Chapter 18 - The Return Journey When Bilbo became conscious again, he noticed that he was alone. He also noticed that his side has won the battle. A man came to the hill to find Bilbo, so Bilbo took off his ring and went to the camp where the people were waiting. Gandalf was happy to see Bilbo alive because Gandalf was worried that Bilbo was dead. However, there was bad news too; Thorin had a fatal injury and was dying. Thorin gave his last words to Bilbo. He said he will give some treasure to Bilbo and take back the words he had said to Bilbo. Of course, Bilbo told Thorin he wasn't angry at Thorin. Then Thorin said, "If more of us valued food and cheer and songs above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world" and passed away. Bilbo turned away and wept; he had a kind soul.
